Description

One gram of this powder can be combined with 100mL of either a TAE (Tris-acetate) or TBE (Tris-borate) buffer, to create a 1% gel that is suitable for analytical and preparative electrophorersis. A polysaccharide, Agarose powder is cultivated from seaweed or kelp, and is a purer form of agar-agar. The preferred matrix for the separation and purification of nucleic acid fragments such as DNA and RNA, electrophoresis grade Agarose sees widespread use in the fields of pharmaceutical, forensic, genetic and others around the world. The two basic components of agarose gel are the agarose powder, and a buffering solution such as TAE (Tris-acetate) or TBE (Tris-borate). 1 gram of powder can be combined with 100mL of a buffering solution to create a 1% gel that is suitable for analytical and preparative electrophoresis. Like gelatin, the Agarose powder is sturred into the buffering solution and then heated until is is completely melted. Flourescing dyes can be added at this time, before the mixture is poured into a electrophoresis tray to solidify. Gel electrophoresis is a procedure that sorts nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA based on their size and charge. Using an electric current, DNA can be made to move through the agarose gel. The larger molecules will move more slowly, while the smaller molecules will travel faster through the gel. Because different molecules differ in size, each one that is different will form distinctive bands that are visible on the gel. Nucleic fragments can be injected into the wells of the gel using a pipette, and once separated can be blotted to nitrocellulose or nylon membranes using a standard blotting procedure. If a fluorescent dye has been added to the mixture, a black light can be used to view the separated fragments and take pictures for future analysis.

Applications include SDS-acrylamide gels, acrylamide gradient gels, I.E.F., preparative gels, and first dimension of 2-D analysis. Units are supplied with solid BD Vacutainer stoppers for variable tube sizes. Stoppers may be punched with a cork borer to fit tube gel diameters between 1mm and 7mm. Much of the platinum wire is enclosed inside a central power core for protection from breakage. The white central power core provides contrast to enhance dye band visibility. The lower buffer chamber is surrounded by a cooling jacket for efficient temperature control. An interlocking safety cover is provided on the upper reservoir.
